"Saltworks: Return to the Sea" by Motoi Yamamoto @ Loyola Marymount University LABAND Gallery
Septemnber 8 - December 8, 2012
Here for the next month at Loyola Marumount Universitie's LABAND gallery is an extraordinary installation using salt. Motoi Yamamoto uses a small squirt bottle loaded with salt, then carefully applies the salt in a specific pattern to fill almost the entire gallery floor.
In Japanese culture, salt is used to ward off a negative and evil spirits. Sometimes a Japanese business owner may place just a pile of salt upon entrance to the restaurant or business, salt is also used for funerary purposes in traditional Japanese burial.
Here are some photographs of the artist at work and some shots of his past endeavors in other galleries.
